Licence and pricing

Free for you and your team.

Fettlecode will be free to self-host, with every feature, and for now that includes every organisation, whatever its size. Personal use and organisations with up to 10 users stay free for good; later, larger organisations will need a commercial licence, at a discount for those already using it, and get exactly the same software. We wrote down what we promise, so you know what you're getting.

What we promise

Three promises, in writing.

  1. One product, no feature tiers

Personal users, small teams and commercial licence holders get the same software, with every feature: single sign-on (SAML, OIDC and LDAP), SCIM, the audit log, approval rules, code owners, the merge queue, stacked review and live editing. A commercial licence pays for the right to use it in a larger organisation, not for features held back.

  2. Your code and data stay yours

Repositories are plain Git. A full JSON export of reviews and comments, a documented schema and importers will always be maintained, so you can leave whenever you like.

  3. The code stays readable

Once it's published, the source code of every release stays public, so you can always see what you're running.

The licence, in plain words

Fettlecode is source-available under the Fettle Community Licence: its code will be public for anyone to read, but it isn't open source.

  • Free: personal use. Run Fettlecode, change it and learn from it for yourself, for nothing, and share copies with other people for their own use.
  • Free: organisations with up to 10 users. Businesses, schools, charities, clubs and teams can run Fettlecode for their own work, free, while no more than 10 people have an account on it.
  • Free for every organisation, for now. Right now, organisations of any size can use Fettlecode free, with no limit on users. We'll announce the end at least 90 days ahead.
  • Later: organisations with more than 10 users. When the free period ends, an organisation with more than 10 users will need a commercial licence, whether or not anyone is paid, at a discount if it's already using Fettlecode. Write to [email protected].
  • Never: rebranding or reselling. Nobody may rebrand Fettlecode, pass it off as their own, or sell, rent or host it for others, unless we've agreed it in writing.
  • Contributions. Changes you send us can be used in any version of Fettlecode, including commercial ones.

This is a summary: the licence itself, published with the source code, is what counts.

Pricing

How paying for Fettlecode will work.

Personal use and organisations with up to 10 users will be free. For now, so are larger ones; later they'll need a commercial licence. Hosting and support plans come after 1.0. Prices aren't set yet.

Free for every organisation, for now. No prices yet. We'll give at least 90 days' notice before larger organisations need a commercial licence. To ask about one, write to [email protected].

Questions

The ones people ask first.

Can I use Fettlecode now?

Not yet. It's in development, and the source code and Docker image aren't public. The roadmap shows what's done and what's left before the first release.

Will it be free?

For personal use, and for organisations with up to 10 users, yes: every feature, with no limit on repositories, and you pay only for the server you run it on. For now it's free for every organisation, whatever its size; later, an organisation with more than 10 users will need a commercial licence.

Who counts as a user?

Everyone with an active account on your Fettlecode, counted across all your copies: staff, contractors, volunteers, students and outside collaborators. Deactivated accounts and accounts used only by integrations or CI don't count. Once the free period ends, an organisation that grows past 10 users has 30 days to get a commercial licence.

Will single sign-on become a paid feature?

No. There are no feature tiers: SAML, OpenID Connect, LDAP and SCIM are in every copy, personal or commercial, and so are the audit log, code owners and the merge queue.

Can I use it at work?

Yes. Right now any organisation can use it free, whatever its size, and a team or organisation with up to 10 users always can. Later, an organisation with more than 10 users will need a commercial licence, at a discount if it's already using Fettlecode. We'll announce that at least 90 days ahead. Write to [email protected].

Where is the source code?

It isn't public yet. It will be published for everyone to read and run under the Fettle Community Licence, with the Docker image, and this site will link to both.

Who makes Fettlecode?

Fettle Software, which also makes Fettleboard, a self-hosted kanban board, and Fettledesk, a self-hosted service desk. Fettlecode can link to both, but each works on its own.
